Update: Microsoft has identified this as an issue with recent updates and they are working to resolve it. This has been resolved for some operating systems by November Microsoft updates. For more information, search the Microsoft website to see if your Operating System and build has an update to resolve the issue.
  • For example, KB4048953 resolves the issue for Windows 10, build 14393.1884:

Addressed issue where applications based on the Microsoft JET Database Engine (Microsoft Access 2007 and older or non-Microsoft applications) fail when creating or opening Microsoft Excel .xls files. The error message is: “Unexpected error from external database driver (1). (Microsoft JET Database Engine)".

Affected updates that may cause this issue include (but are not limited to):

  • Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2 security updates KB4041681 & KB4041678
  • Window 8.1/Windows Server 2012 R2 security update KB4041693
  • Windows 10 security update KB4041676 & KB4041691 . *There have been instances of neither of the two security updates being installed, in that case, removing KB4043961 resolves the issue.
