Error: Login failed for user Domain\User when opening the Education Edge NetCommunity plugin after upgrading to Patch 24

After upgrading the Education Edge to Patch 24 and attempting to open the NetCommunity plugin to process applications or reenrollments, the following error displays:

Online App Start up error: Unable to get count of transactions: Unable to open database connection: Login failed for user 'Domain\User'
We are currently evaluating this issue and will update this article when we have more information. As an alternative, the network user referenced in the error can be added as a user in SQL to resolve the issue. The user can be added by following these steps:
  1. Log into SQL Server Management Studio
  2. Expand the Security tree then expand the Logins tree
  3. Is the network user in the listed as a user?
    1. If not, right click and select New login. For Login name provide the username from the error. Under Server Roles grant public, securityadmin, and sysadmin. Press OK
    2. If so, find the user in the list of users and click on Properties > Server Roles. Grant the same roles as in 3.1
  4. Recycle the REWS app pool.
  5. Verify the issue is resolved.
You can also make user a public user in SQL and assign it to the EE database was db_owner. If you need to add multiple users, you can first add the users to an Active Directory group and then add that group to SQL with db_owner rights on the EE database.

Steps to Duplicate

  1. Upgrade Education Edge to version 787.164.24.
  2. Log into EE
  3. Access the NetCommunity plugin.
  4. Notice that the applications and reenrollment forms did not download and you receive the error message.
