Error: -2147189160, Failed to create the Crystal Database Connector or Error in report(997) - when working with custom plug-in reports after upgrading to RE 7.94/7.95

Error: Error: -2147189160, Failed to create the Crystal Database Connector when previewing a custom Crystal plugin report after previewing a canned report.

Error: Error in report (997) when previewing a canned report after previewing a custom Crystal plugin report.

When working between canned/out of box reports and custom reports accessed via the Blackbaud Custom Reports - Crystal XI plug-in, an error may occur.  The error is seen after successfully working in either canned or plug-in reports.  Errors may only occur after upgrading The Raiser's Edge to 7.94 or above. 
Exit and sign out of The Raiser's Edge before or after working with either canned reports or custom plug-in reports.

We have evaluated this issue as a potential defect and we have determined it will not be addressed in the software in its current state.  In this case, the risks and challenges outweigh the potential benefit of resolving this issue.

We wish we could address each and every issue that we come across, but there are occasions when addressing certain issues would add risk to causing a bigger problem or would put other prioritized initiatives at risk.

Steps to Duplicate

When previewing a custom Crystal plugin report, then previewing a canned report:
  1. Login to RE
  2. Go to Plugins > Blackbaud Custom Reports - Crystal XI
  3. Select a report
  4. Click Preview
  5. Plugin displays without error
  6. Close plugin report preview
  7. Go to Reports > Action Reports > Action Detail Report > Not Completed Actions With High Priority
  8. Click Preview to see error: Error in report (997)
When previewing a canned report, then previewing a custom Crystal plugin report:
  1. Log out of RE
  2. Login back into RE
  3. Go to Reports > Action Reports > Action Detail Report > Not Completed Actions With High Priority
  4. Click Preview
  5. Report displays without error
  6. Close the canned report preview
  7. Go to Plugins > Blackbaud Custom Reports - Crystal XI
  8. Select a report
  9. Click Preview and see error:
    Error -2147189160, Failed to create the Crystal Database Connector.
    (Location: DisplaySingleReport(LogOnServer)). Param number = 0
In both situations, RE must be closed via the Task Manager after receiving the errors.
